In 1914, the "Soldiers & Sailors Christmas Fund" was created to provide English soldiers with a gift to be opened on Christmas Day.

These beautifully embossed brass boxes were filled with either a pipe, tobacco, & a lighter or a writing case, paper, & pencil.

These boxes were named after Princess Mary, the daughter of King George. Mary thought of the idea for the Christmas Fund.
